Investigate Crimes and Find Clues
The cases cover different kinds of crimes, including murders, missing people and cyber attacks. Each one gives you evidence to work through, and your job is to find the useful parts and connect everything together.
You can search through documents, check information in databases and compare what you find with the evidence from the case. Sometimes you already have most of the information you need, but you have to notice the connection yourself.
Taking notes is also important. The game expects you to remember details and keep track of what you have already discovered, especially when a case starts giving you more information.
Use the FDI Software
Your computer comes with several tools to help with investigations. There is a Video and Photo Analyzer for checking media, along with a Citizen and Vehicle Database where you can look up people and vehicles.
ChemScan is another tool available when you need to examine something related to chemicals. You also have a Notepad for keeping track of important details, while the Terminal can be used when a case takes you into something more technical.
You can switch between these tools while working, so the whole investigation happens from the same computer instead of sending you through lots of separate menus.
Help the Field Agents
The people actually out in the field will contact you when they need information. They may ask you to check whether something is true, search for a person or vehicle, identify a suspect or find another detail that can help move the case forward.
Your job is basically to support them from a distance. You are not chasing criminals yourself, but the information you provide can decide what the agents do next.
Sometimes you will have to search several places before you find the answer. Other times, the answer may already be sitting in front of you somewhere in the evidence and you just need to notice it.
Follow the Evidence
The Operator puts a lot of focus on following evidence wherever it leads. A simple-looking clue can turn into something much bigger, especially when different pieces of information start connecting with each other.
Not everything you find is necessarily comfortable to look at either. Some cases can take you into darker parts of the story, and the game makes a point of reminding you that you should not go digging through unauthorized information without letting your superiors know.
There is also a warning about a cyber criminal known as HAL. Any new information about HAL is supposed to be reported to your supervisor, and the FDI clearly does not want sensitive evidence getting into the wrong hands.
